Tanabe Under Brace

Tanabe Under Brace
Often overlooked, especially on vehicles that are reaching higher levels of modification, is the importance of reinforcing the chassis. All vehicles experience flexing of the unibody under various handling loads. Twisting of the chassis is also very common on higher horsepower vehicles.

The Tanabe SUSTEC UNDERBRACE prevents this unwanted behaviour by connecting specific points of the undercarriage to reinforce the chassis. Unique internal double-i-beam construction is highly rigid, and lightweight, so the chassis may be significantly reinforced without adding surplus weight. Noticeable gains in balance and stability are gained after it's simple bolt on installation.

Tanabe Under Brace Product Information and Installation: Date: 4/19/2006
Vehicle: 1994 Honda Prelude Si
Special Thanks to: Product Images and article by Mark L.

Kit comes with everything you need which is basically the under braces and a couple of stickers.

Tools:

  • Ratchet (preferable because stripping nuts and bolts is less likely)
  • 17mm socket
  • Any kind of extension for the ratchet (because sometimes you might not be able to reach the bolt with just the socket)
  • Floor jack (or however you prefer to lift the car up)
  • Jack stands (for safety)
  • Latex gloves (because it gets pretty dirty under the car sometimes)

Front: Honda 92-96 Prelude (BB1/4) Tanabe Sustec Under Brace (Front) Part#TUB008F S-Point: 2 Point

First start with lifting the car up from the front using one of the jack points. Then unscrew the bolt that connects the lower control arm to the chassis on the left and the right side.

Next, place the under brace with the holes on the under brace lining up with the holes where the bolts that went to the lower control arm went. Insert the bolt and proceed to tighten the bolt into the other side of the lower control arm. Tighten the bolts and then lower the car off the jack and the installation of the front under brace is done.

Rear: Honda 92-96 Prelude (BB1/4) Tanabe Sustec Under Brace (Rear) Part#TUB020R S-Point: 2 Point

First of all, start with lifting the car from the rear again using jack points and supporting the car with jack stands. Then unscrew the bolt that connects the rear lower control arm to the chassis.

Then proceed the remove the bolts. Line up the holes on the under brace to the holes where the lower control arm bolts were and insert the bolts to hold it in place. Proceed to tighten the bolt into the other side of the control arm. Make sure the bolts are tight and lower the car off the jack and installation of the rear under brace is complete.

Before testing the new capabilities of your car, drive around for about 50-100 miles normally to let the under braces seat properly and to make sure you've tightened the bolts enough. Failure to do so may cause removal of the under braces because of the loose bolt and damage to the car.
